The conference Around 1866: Leo Tolstoy and the Sixties (the 7th Interdisciplinary Colloquium of the OSTU Intellectual Club) was held at the Yasnaya Polyana Estate-Museum. The theme of the conference was not chosen at random, as 1866 was a year of great importance in Russian and European history. It was the year of the Great Reforms, the year of the first attempted assassination of Tsar Alexander II (the Karakazov attempt), the year of the publication of Crime and Punishment by F.M. Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolstoys continuation of work on the novel War and Peace, and the scientifically and socio-politically significant publication of Sechenovs Reflexes of the Brain. In Europe, the year saw the Austro-Prussian Fraternal War, the spread of Marxs Capital, the rapid development of the socialist movement, and many other events. The pivotal nature of that year is why it was decided to dedicate the recurrent conference to different aspects of the historical and cultural life of 150 years ago. The joint conferences are held annually according to an agreement on cooperation between St. Tikhons Orthodox University and the Yasnaya Polyana Estate-Museum. This year´s conference sessions were attended by OSTU teachers and staff, including archpriest G. Orehanov, I.L. Bagration - Muhranelli, E.Y. Knorre, N.A. Vaganova, and N.E. Sekacheva. In addition, a group of OSTU students were also present at the conference. The conference had an international character as well it was attended by teachers and students from the United States, Poland, Latvia, and Oman.
