A British literature expert from Scotland gives several lectures for students of the Philological Department
On the 12th of October, 2016, the Philological Department hosted lectures by Dr. John Byrom, a specialist in British literature from Scotland. He gave two lectures for the students of the Germanic Philology Department. The first lecture was devoted to the works by Wordsworth and Coleridge, two poets who stood at the origins of English and European Romanticism. Professor Byrom described very vividly the Romantics’ views on the vocation of the poet, the essence of poetry and inspiration, and noted the uniqueness of each of the two authors of Lyrical Ballads. The professor´s second lecture was devoted to the figurative language of Shakespeare. As an example, Dr. Byrom gave listeners a fragment from the historical play Henry V, where literally every line contains trails or unusual syntax. Prof. Byron also talked about Shakespeare´s fascination with music and the mysterious "dance of the planets," an idea which dated back to antiquity and saw the movement of the planets as embodying harmony. The professor also discussed with the students the disciplines studied by Shakespeare while he was at school. Prof. Byrom´s lectures were very emotional and expressive, and he was a gifted and charismatic speaker. Some listeners from the first lecture chose to stay on the second one. According to students, after listening to the professor, they wanted to read the discussed authors for themselves.
