Presentation by Saint Tikhon’s assistant professor in Sofia, Bulgaria
From June 9-11, 2017, the academic St. John of Rila International Conference took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, organized by Saint George’s Church and the Faculty of Theology in Sofia University, with the permission of Patriarch Neophytus of Bulgaria. This year’s conference was the first to be held and was dedicated to the memory of Saint John of Rila, one of the heavenly patrons of Bulgaria. Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of the Humanities was represented by the lead researcher in the Department of Modern History of the Russian Orthodox Church, Andrei Alexandrovitch Kostryukov.

Mr. Kostryukov, who is Assistant Professor at Saint Tikhon’s University, talked about Metropolitan Stephen (Shokov), Exarch of the Bulgarian Church, his relations with the Russian Church, and his views on the primacy of the Constantinopolitan See.

The Conference finished wth a discussion with Abbot (Hegumen) Mihail Bregvadze about the current situation of Orthodoxy in Georgia. Those who attended the event expressed their hope that the conference would become a tradition and take place on a regular basis.
