Over 130 doctoral students begin distance-learning programs

The entrance examinations for the Fall Semester at Saint Tikhons Universitys Institute for Distance Learning have come to an end for the most sought-after courses, the Masters degree in Theology and the Continuing Education course in Fundamentals of Orthodoxy.

The level of competition was high for students desiring to obtain tertiary and continuing education over the Internet through this program. 23 students competed for twelve places in the distance-learning Masters course on Orthodox Theology and Philosophy in Contemporary Discourse. 96 applications were submitted for 60 places in the Theology program. The entrance exam for the Fundamentals of Orthodoxy course had to be closed one week early because of the huge influx of applicants: 150 persons applied for just 60 places.

The deputy director for educational programming of the Institute for Distance Learning, Oksana Nikolaevna Shevchenko, remarked that the minimum grade to be accepted onto the preparatory course in Theology was very high, and that all successful applicants received top marks on the exam, which is conducted in the form of an on-line test.

Our applicants for the Distance Learning programs came from a wide area, even though the largest number of graduates traditionally come from Russia and the Ukraine, Ms. Shevchenko elaborated. But this year there were a lot of residents from the Russian Far East and Siberia who were accepted onto the course.

For post-graduates looking to study remotely via the Institute for Distance Learning at Saint Tikhons University, it is still possible to apply for a wide range of Continuing Education programs in the Fall Semester. In addition, applications for further education programs in Theology and Fundamentals of Orthodoxy are already open for the winter semester (the next round of entrance examinations for these courses will begin in mid-December 2017). A list of programs and schedules can be found on the page Calendar of Educational Programs (ru) on the site of the Institute for Distance Learning (ru).
