Saint Tikhon’s researchers take part in Petersburg conference

On November 25, 2017, an international academic conference took place in St Petersburg, titled “View Across a Century: The October Revolution of 1917 and its Consequences for the History of Religious Life in Russia and Finland”. A series of talks at this forum was given by teachers and faculty members of Saint Tikhon’s University.

The conference welcomed over 60 participants. Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of the Humanities was represented at the conference by several historians and theologians. The plenary session in the assembly hall of the Hydro-meteorological Institute began with a presentation on “The Crisis of Church-State Relations in Russia on the Eve of the Revolution” by Dr. Georgiy V. Bezhanidze, Deputy Head of the Department of General and Russian Church History and Canon Law.

Drs. Irina V. Vorontsova and Tatiana I. Shevchenko, senior researchers in the Department of Modern History of the Russian Orthodox Church, gave presentations on “The Question of Clerical Involvement in Public Life and Policy from 1905-1917 and its Reflection in the Decisions of the 1917-18 Local Council” and “The Holy Transfiguration Valaam Monastery in 1917-1918”, respectively, at the conference session on “Religious Life and Spiritual Crisis in 1917 Russian Society”.

Certificates of participation were given to all attendees at the conference’s conclusion The visitors had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Christian Culture at the Church of the Venerable Martyr Andrew of Crete, a city church (metochion) of the Monastery of Ss Constantine and Helen.
