Swiss Ambassador Yves Rossier gives lecture to Saint Tikhon’s students

On November 27, 2017, Swiss Ambassador to Russia Yves Rossier gave a lecture on “Language as a means of communication” in the main building of Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of the Humanities.

Swiss Ambassador to Russia Yves Rossier discussed how the collective experience of the speakers of a language is reflected in it, about how each word uttered by a speaker of the language must be situated within the context in which the person is communicating, which is important for understanding the sense conveyed and the target of the utterance. Over the course of the lecture, the question of the veracity of what people say and the criteria for this were discussed, as well as strategies for effective and morally sound communication.

In the words of the Dean of the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, Dr. Alexei V. Aksyonov, the audience received answers to a great many questions on problems on translation from one language to another, development and simplification of a language, the connection between language and thought, words and actions.

Very Rev. Archpriest Georgiy Orehanov, Deputy Rector of Saint Tikhon’s University for International Collaboration, remarked that the Swiss Embassy and Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of the Humanities are bound together by a long-standing and fruitful collaboration. A great many academic events held at the University and the attendance of professors from Swiss Universities, have been supported on several occasions on the part of the Embassy. “It must moreover be emphasized that Ambassador Rossier himself, being, as he is, a highly qualified researcher, has demonstrated immense interest in the life of Saint Tikhon’s University and tries to be present in person at lectures and conferences when his demanding and busy schedule permits this”, Fr. Georgiy concluded.
