Opening of exhibition to New Martyrs and Confessors

On December 20, 2017, in the Main Building of Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of the Humanities, an exhibition was opened, titled “Memorial Museum of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia”.

One of the main foci of academic work at Saint Tikhon’s University has been collecting information about those who suffered for their Faith and the Church in the years of mass persecutions. Thanks to this work, an electronic database of New Martyrs and Confessors has been created to help prepare materials for the canonization of these new 20th-century saints. The creation of the “Memorial Museum” is a logical continuation of this work, in that it allows visitors to discover for themselves less familiar episodes in the history of 20th century Russia as well as outstanding figures from the period of attacks on the Church.

The “Memorial Museum of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia” lays out the phenomenon of martyrdom as a triumph of faith. The exhibition is dedicated to little-known aspects of early 20th-century Russian history, spiritual life under conditions of persecution, and the spiritual heroism of the new martyrs.

At the root of the exhibition is the private collection of Saint Tikhon’s University, which is kept in the Department of Modern History of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as materials from the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the State Archive for Modern History, the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History, the international Memorial society, and the Museum of the history of the GULAG.
