Screening of documentary on Father Alexander Schmemann

On 22 December 2017 in the Saint Vladimirs Hall of the Main Building of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities, there was a screening of Apostle of Joy, a documentary film on the life and ministry of the distinguished 20th-century theologian and homilist, Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann.

The film, a documentary life history, was created through the efforts of relatives, friends, students, and colleagues of Father Alexander. Through the eyes of these people, the audience was able to see Father Alexander as someone who loved the whole world, enjoyed every second of life, and was a wise and inspiring preacher. Life is a gift, everything in the world is a gift!, he is quoted as saying by his wife, Ulyana Sergeevna Schmemann.

The film was directed by Andrei Zheleznyakov, under consultation by Elena Dorman. The motion picture covered Alexander Schmemanns studies at the Saint-Serge Theological Institute in Paris, how he met his wife, and his family life in France. The audience members learnt about the Schmemann familys move to North America and about the fulfilment of Father Alexanders dream to preach everywhere. His students and colleagues talked about the foundation of Saint Vladimirs Seminary in America, about the meaning of his preaching and reforms, as well as about teaching in a seminary. He was always joyful: in the seminary, at home, whilst serving or taking a walk in the streets. Thats why we called him the Apostle of Joy, one of Father Alexanders colleagues related.
