Arte Mandoline Ensemble from Luxembourg gives concert in Conciliar Chamber
On 27 May 2018, the Conciliar Chamber of Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of the Humanities witnessed the grand opening of the Third International Absolute Baroque Festival. A performance was given by the Arte Mandolinne assembly from Luxembourg, one of the major European groups that plays Baroque-era music.

The audience was presented with a concert programme that bore the title Absolute Baroque. “The Baroque era has become an absolute measure for beauty and harmony,” the organizers of the concert explained. “The music of this time is decorated with legendary names: Bach, Buxtehude, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Albinoni. This is far from being a complete list of composers whose voices have come down to us through the ages, whose souls were animated when they performed pieces of music, concerts, oratorios. Exaltation and philosophy, orderly structure and, at the same time, improvised flights of fancy: such a combination of traits can rarely be encountered anywhere nowadays.”

Arte Mandoline is a leading and highly sought-after European musical group. It was founded in 2001 by two mandolinists, Juan Carlos Muños and Marie de Pavon. One of the distinctive features of the group is their skill in playing the mandolin, an instrument that dominated European music over the course of over four hundred years from the 16th-19th centuries. The ensemble’s unique sound comes from the unusual combination of instruments it comprises: two mandolins, a mandola, a guitar, a cembalo, and a violincello.
