Second Congress of the Russian Religious Studies Society
On October 19-20, sessions of the Second Congress of the Russian Religious Studies Society were held in Saint Tikhon´s University and Moscow State University.

The Faculty of Theology at Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities and the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University hosted the Second Congress of the Russian Religious Studies Society on “Understanding Religion: Historical and Contemporary Aspects”, which brought together Russian and foreign researchers into religion.

The Congress was attended by 74 researchers into religion, by over 50 presenters, remote presenters, and audience members from 3 countries (Russia, Belarus, and Finland), nine regions of Russia, and 23 educational and academic organizations.

The Congress was opened on October 19 in the Main Building of Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities. The attendees were welcomed on behalf of the organizational committee by Konstantin Antonov, President of the Russian Religious Studies Society and the Head of the Department of the Philosophy of Religion and Religious Aspects of Culture of the Faculty of Theology of Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities.

At the plenary session, papers were given by researchers from Saint Petersburg, Volgograd, and Minsk.

At the end of the plenary session, the Congress continued its work across two further sessions (“Religion as Society” and “The Psychology of Religion”) and two round tables (on the history of the religion and the history of religious studies in Russia, dedicated to the 250th anniversary of Friedrich Schleiermacher).
The second day of the conference at the Faculty of Philosophy of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) opened with a welcome address and a plenary presentation by Igor Yablokov, head of the Department of the Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy at MSU.

The work of the Congress continued with an open discussion on the role of expertise in religious studies, two ordinary sessions (“Religion as Society” and “Authority in Religion”), two roundtables (“Paganism and Neo-paganism” and “Religion in Television Serials and Cinema”), and an open lecture (given by Kaarina Aitamurto, PhD, Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki), and the Congress of the Society.

The next Congress of the Russian Religious Studies Society will take place in Saint Petersburg in autumn of 2019.
