Saint Tikhon's University Faculty Member Presents in Rome
On October 20, an associate professor of the Faculty of Philology of Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities gave a presentation at the Festival of Russian Culture in Rome.

From October 6-27, 2018, a series of events took place in the Institute of Russian Language and Culture in Rome as part of the Festival of Russian Culture: meetings with writers and publishers, free Russian language lessons, lectures by researchers into Russian literature, and plays.

On October 20, one of the events of the Festival took place, led by Carlo Fredduzzi, the director of the Institute and a well-known expert in Slavonic languages: Dr Irina Melentieva, an associate professor of the Faculty of Philology at Saint Tikhon´s University, gave a lecture on “The Figure and Works of Alexander Solzhenitsyn in Contemporary Art. Solzhenitsynian Theatre.”

The lecture was about theatrical productions of the author´s dramatic as well as epic and lyrical works in Russia between 1995-2018. The audience was particularly intrigued by the discussion on premiers that had taken place in this very year: “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” (Theater on Pokrovka) and “The Red Wheel” (The Central Theatre of the Russian Army).

The concluding remarks were delivered by Daniele di Sora, the director of the “Voland” publishing house (the leading publishing house specializing in translated Russian literature). She presented a new translation of Alexander Solzhenitsyn´s novel “In the First Circle”.

Ms. di Sora explained to those present why a new translation of Solzhenitsyn´s “First Circle” was necessary. In the new translation – which is written in more contemporary language than the previous one and has a more correct title – not only have factual errors from the old translation been corrected, but the Italian version has been brought as close as possible to the artistic fabric of the source work from the point of view of syntax and sound structure.
