Saint Tikhon's Teacher Irina Melentieva Gives Talk in Italy
On November 8, Irina Meletieva, a Lecturer at the Faculty of Philology at Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities, gave a talk in Italy.
Events celebrating the centenary of Alexander Solzhenitsyn´s birth took place in Milan State University and the Catholic University of Milan.


Together with the House of Russians Abroad and the Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori Fund, Milan State University and the Catholic University of Milan held a roundtable on “Alexander Solzhenitsyn in Italy. Publication History and Prospects for Study” and a seminar on “The Role of Alexander Solzhenitsyn´s Works in Italy and France”.

On November 7, 2018, the roundtable on “Alexander Solzhenitsyn in Italy” took place. It was opened by Gianni Turchetta, the Director of the Department of Linguistic and Intercultural Research at Milan State University. Next, Galina Tiurina, the head of the department for the research of Solzhenitsyn´s heritage, talked about certain documents, manuscripts, and photographs from Solezhenitsyn´s archive. This was followed by talks by Sergio Rapetti, a translation of Solzhenitsyn´s works, Maurizia Calusio, and Professor Elena Dundović of the University of Pisa.

On the same day, the exhibition “Trusted Chronicler of an Era” was opened in the hall in front of the main lecture theater of Milan State Univesity. The Italian version of the exhibition, which not only included twelve panels prepared by the House of Russians Abroad and translated into Italian, but also four panels specially created by the “Ultreya” agency (with assistance from the Mondadori Fund and Milan State University) for Italian audiences. The “Itaca” agency also published a catalogue to mark the opening of the exhibition.

On November 8, 2018, a seminar on the “Role of Solzhenitsyn´s Works in Italy and France” took place at the Catholic University of Milan, which began with an opening address by Giovanni Gobbera, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Next, Professor Giuseppe Ghini from Urbino University shared his views on the role of proverbs and sayings in the works of Solzhenitsyn. After a memorable talk by Ornella Discacciati, who translated “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch” into Italian, Elda Garetto and Sara Mazzucchelli, of the Catholic University of Milan. This was followed by a talk by Professor Adriano dell´Acta of the Catholic University of Milan, who gave an overview of the reactions of early French readers of “The GULAG Archipelago”.

The seminar closed with a talk by Dr. Irina Meletieva, a lecturer at the Faculty of Philology at Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities, who talked about museums, exhibitions, conferences, editorial projects, monuments, and plays in connection with the centenary of Solzhenitsyn´s birth.
