First Group of Distance Learning Master’s Students Awarded Degrees by ROC Education Commission

The first ever viva voce examination for master’s students on the “Orthodox Theology and Philosophy in Contemporary Discourse” distance-learning program recently took place at the Institute for Distance Learning of Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of the Humanities. On February 4, 2019, the first group of master’s students presented their coursework to the attestation commission led by Archpriest Maxim Kozlov, the President of the Education Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The commission of examiners included Metropolitan Seraphim of Penza and Nizhny Lomov; Bishop Tarasy of Veliky Ustyug and Totma; Archpriest Gennady Egorov, the Director of the Institute for Distance Learning; Tatiana Vladimirovna Melanina, the Director of the Department for New Technologies in the Humanities; and Tatiana Nikolaevna Rezvykh, a Lecturer in the same faculty.

After the viva, Archpriest Maxim Kozlov noted that he had a positive impression of this first-ever examination for distance-learning theology students. “I had the a priori conviction that this undertaking was relevant to our current system of theological education,” he explained after the session was concluded. “It is clear that there is a demand for distance education that is able fully to replace on-site education, including for master’s degrees. As we have seen today, current means of communication enable us to educate the sort of people who can write interesting, outstanding, and creative pieces of work, and make their own contributions to our system of theological education. I would like to congratulate all those who have successfully passed their exams and the teachers who prepared them.” The Institute of Distance Learning master’s program is designed to prepare students to solve timely problems confronting theology in the contemporary world and to become involved in useful activity on behalf of the Church.
