Axios School Olympiad Held at Saint Tikhon`s University

On February 3, 2019, Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities (STOUH) played host to the fourteenth successive Axios Multidisciplinary School Olympiad. Over 700 schoolchildren from over 34 regions of the Russian Federation took part, writing over 1000 essays across 14 disciplines.

The results of the Olympiad are taken into account as part of STOUH´s admissions process. The Literature and Sociology disciplines of the Axios Olympiad are officially recognized by the Russian Council of School Olympiads, which confers an advantage in university admissions upon medalists and winners in these categories.

The live round of the Olympiad was dedicated to the memory of Saint Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus´, and featured the following categories: Foundations of Christianity, Russian History, Mathematics, Russian Language, Church Slavonic, Literature, English Language, Music, Fine Arts, Art History, Sociology, Geography, Pedagogy (Years 9-11), Sociology (Years 10-11), and Economics (Years 10-11). A distance round of the Olympiad took place in November/December 2018 and attracted over 2500 competitors from over 63 regions.

The Olympiad opened with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Church of Saint Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles. After the service, Archpriest Alexei Emilyanov, Deputy Rector of Saint Tikhon´s University, addressed the schoolchildren. He emphasized that the Olympiad was taking place in a special historic place, the Conciliar Chamber, where, 100 years ago, the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church took place, electing Saint Tikhon of Moscow as Patriarch.

Father Alexei invited all present to get a sense of the very special atmosphere that still exists within the university´s historic walls thanks to the lead pastors – Saint Tikhon and his associates – who shaped the history of the Church during these years. In his words, this lived history, with its “Tikhonite” spirit, remains with us to this day, and we certainly hope to rise to the lofty vocation of the “Tikhonites” themselves. Finally, Father Alexei wished the participants in the Olympiad every success.
