Faculty of Social Sciences Holds International Conference
On March 7, 2019, an All-Russian Conference was held on “Man in the Orthodox Church: Young People´s Perspectives”. For the sixth year in a row, it brought together undergraduate, graduates, and young researchers. On this occasion, this list of attendees included researchers from Greece and the Ukraine, and students from Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities (STOUH), Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), Russian State Social University, Novosibirsk State University, the Russian Orthodox University of Saint John the Divine, and other institutions.

The conference was opened by Archpriest Konstantin Polskov, Deputy Rector (Academic) of Saint Tikhon´s University. He noted that employers expect that graduates should not only have “amassed knowledge”, but also learnt to think for themselves, take quick decisions, and find their way in a rapidly changing environment. These are skills that are developed through academic work and taking part in various conferences.

The opening address was delivered by Professor Igor Ryazantsev, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He reminded those present of the fact that the academic level of the students who participate in this forum has continued to go up each year. In 2019, many of the papers were on topics relating to the information age, the social processes of digitization, and applied research into the Internet.

With this, the official speeches came to an end and the talks began. One of the most memorable was that of MSU doctoral student Igor Ilin gave a talk on traditional spiritual and moral values in the official policy of contemporary Russia. This was the first time he took part in the student-led conference of STOUH´s Faculty of Social Sciences, and he spoke very highly of the degree of organization and the topics that came up for discussion. In Ilin´s view, the contemporary media-sphere is oversaturated with bogus stories and an unnatural agenda. To change this, the Orthodox community must come up with a relevant, meaningful answer. It is only then that an agenda in line with traditional spiritual and moral values can begin to be formed.

Summarizing, Faculty Dean Prof. Ryazantsev noted that above all, “we are gladdened by the genuine interest in academic research shown by the undergraduates, Master´s students, and graduates who took part in this gathering, without which academia would not be able to move forward. The computational and analytical center of our Faculty is actively working on the problem of digitization, on its risks and possibilities from an Orthodox standpoint. We would like to invite all the conference participants to take part in our research on digitization.” After this, the presenters all received certificates of participation.
