STOUH Associate Professor Irina Melentieva Gives Talk at Conference at Moscow State University of Education

On March 22, 2019, Dr. Irina E. Melentieva, Associate Professor of Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities, gave a talk on the significance of the topos of the “tambour girl” in 19th- and 20th-century Russian literature, as part of a Russia-wide conference on “Allegory, Symbolism, and the Fantastic in the Poetics of Russian Literature of the 17th-19th Centuries”, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of writer Ivan Krylov and the 210th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Gogol.


The conference was inaugurated in the Alexei Losev auditorium of the Main Building of the Moscow State University of Education, with an address by Professor Elena Gennadievna Chernysheva, Dr. phil. habil., director of the Institute of Philology at Moscow State University of Education, who bade all the participants fruitful participation in the conference.

Next, during the plenary session of the conference, talks were given by Moscow State University Professor Vladimir Voropaev, Dr. phil. habil. (“Gogol on Krylov”); Professor Nina Trofimova, Dr. phil. habil., of Moscow State University of Education (“The Motif of the Encounter Between Man and the Serpent in the Fables of Ivan Krylov Against the Backdrop of the Literary Tradition”); Professor Vladimir Korovin, Dr. phil. habil. (“The Versification of the Psalms by Ivan Krylov in the Context of the Literature of the 1790s”); and F. P. Fursov, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Russkaya Slovesnost´ (“Russia as a Gift. Reflections on Krylov´s Fables”).

After a break, the conference continued with four further sessions on: 1) Tradition and Innovtation in the Work of Ivan Krylov; 2. The Mythological and Poetic Principle in the Work of Nikolai Gogol; 3. Traditions Around Nikolai Gogol and Symbolic/Allegoric Imagery in Russian Literature from the 17th-20th Centuries.

Dr. Irina Evgenieva Melentieva, Associate Professor of Literary History and Theory of the Faculty of Philology of Saint Tikhon´s Orthodox University of the Humanities (whose talk was on “The Topos of the ´Tambour Girl´ or ´Embroidery Girl´ in 19th-Century Russian Literature”) took part in the third session of the conference. The presenter revealed a set of oft-repeated motifs in 19th-century Russian literature, centеred around the image of a girl engaged in needlework. The topos can be found in the works of Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Nikolai Leskov, Alexander Ostrovsky, Nikolai Tolstoi, and other authors. Dr. Melentieva also demonstrated that this topos is transformed in the texts of 20th-century authors such as Marina Tsvetaeva, Anna Akhmatova, Mikhail Kuzmin, Boris Pasternak, Fyodor Sologub, Sergei Auslender, Varlam Sharlamov, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and others.
